Moving out.

Welp, looks like my membership expired here on DA. Told myself that after it expired, I'd basically move out of DA.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the premiere of Invader Zim. Ten years ago at this time, I was graduating elementary school. Now I'm a junior in college, time sure flies by, doesn't it? I wanted to write a little retrospective about my favorite TV show and how it stands today.
I think Invader Zim was a bit before it's time and the network wasn't sure how to handle the show. I have a feeling that Nick wanted the show to cater to a younger audience, but in reality, the show was for kids in their late teens, not the impressionable 11 year old I was. And boy did this show leave an impact.
I will admit right here and now, I was that kid. I was the goth wannabe kid who bought all the Zim shirts and jewelry. I wanted to talk about the show all the time. I drew fanart and I was part of the online community. I was THAT fan, you know. But I am a firm believer in never regretting something that made you happy, and those things make me very happy at that age. I don't regret it at all. In fact, my interest in this one thing made me explore things like art and online forums. The first major forum I was a part of was a Zim fansite. I would have never discovered artists like Gatobob if not for Zim and the internet.
Looking back, those were the best days for the fandom. But how well has it held up over the years since the cancellation? In 2004 we got the DVD release of the series, over 2 years after the cancellation and STILL I think the fandom was strong, but not as strong. Since then, I've out grown it. I no longer go to the fansites (the major one I was a part of shut down in 2003), I don't wear the shirts and I don't buy the merchandise. Do I love it any less? Not at all. I've just moved on, that's all.
I think that's what needs to happen, especially after this years InvaderCON. I think it's time to let Zim die with whatever dignity he has left and stop trying to revive the series. Please, Hot Topic, it's time to stop selling merchandise. Please stop pestering Jhonen to make new episodes. BUT! Don't stop being a fan. Make fanart, make your fan animations, and if that's your thing, write fanfiction. Tell people about the show, but please let's stop trying to revive the series. I don't want to stifle anyone's creativity or form of expression at all, so please just remember the good times.
Invader Zim still is my favorite TV show of all time and it's going to be pretty damn hard to beat. But not for the reasons you might think. Yes, it had great writing and great art direction, but what it did overall was inspire me to seriously consider a carrier in illustration and animation. Sure I have other influences, but this show was the turning point. Hell, look at my DA username, a relic of when I joined in 2003. Even my internet handle and OC name, Taku, is evidence from the show.
I know how pathetic it might sound to attribute all of this to a show that's widely sneered at because of it's fanbase, but it really is true. Invader Zim is proof a fanbase can ruin the reputation of something, but I'm not going to stop liking it. Yes, I'm being defensive, it's hard not to be about something you're passionate about.
I know I'll be letting my kids watch this show.

So I'm kinda in a rut, art-wise. This portfolio review has basically drained me artistically, so I'm looking for something to do to refresh my creative juices. I thought about doing more Fate/Spurious Iteration stuff, but since there has been a profound lack of participation (>_>), that too has been draining me.
So what am I going to do? I'll tell you what. FAN ART! But not just any old fan art. Not of anything from anime, video games or TV shows. No. What I'm going to do is this.
My favorite literary characters!
So here's the list of what I'm hopefully going to get done. I'm going to try to do characters from books that haven't been made into a movie/cartoon or have a huge fandom here on DA. So yeah, no Harry Potter, LotR or Redwall. :/ Here's the list with books.
1. Random Dent (Mostly Harmless, And Another Thing) - Probably going to go off of the And Another Thing version. She's more lulzy there.
2. Suzy Turquoise Blue (Keys to the Kingdom series) - The best character from the series
3. Sabriel (the Abhorsen Trilogy) - |D She's just cool
4. Ella (Shade's Children) - Okay, last Garth Nix book character I swear.
5. Will Parry (His Dark Materials) - Lyra is too obvious and he wasn't in the movie, so nyeh
Okay, I'm going to start there. I'll do more guys later, but I don't want to overextend myself.

Okay, so all 4 of you that actually read my journals, listen up. I need help putting together my portfolio to apply for an illustration major and I need help picking artwork.
